Private Investigation and Colorado State Laws

Scope of Practice

Private investigators in Colorado are authorized to conduct various activities, including surveillance, background checks, and gathering evidence for legal proceedings. However, they must adhere to state laws and regulations governing their conduct (Colorado Revised Statutes § 12-58.5-106, 2018).

Restrictions on Activities

Colorado law prohibits private investigators from engaging in certain activities, such as wiretapping or trespassing on private property without consent. Violation of these restrictions can result in disciplinary action and potential criminal charges (Colorado Revised Statutes § 12-58.5-107, 2018).

Confidentiality Requirements

Private investigators are often entrusted with sensitive information and must maintain confidentiality in their dealings with clients and the subjects of their investigations. Breach of confidentiality can result in legal liability and damage to the investigator's reputation (Colorado Revised Statutes § 12-58.5-110, 2018).
